Dore Stein presents Tangents Concert Series: Livas Trio live at Underflow

Livas Trio are Vagelis Karipis (percussion), Taxiarchis Georgoulis (oud) and Tasos Poulios (kanun)

Vagelis Karipis

Vangelis Karipis was born in Athens (1971). He studied byzantine music and music theory in the Greek Music School from where he graduated in 1992. At the same period, he started playing frame drums, first as self –taught and then as a student of Tricy Shankaral, Joe Santos, Jammey Haddad, Arto Tuncboyaciayan. Till today he had worked with several Greek composers and singers (Dionysis Savvopoulos, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Nikos Kypourgos, Orfeas Peridis, Yiorgos Andreou, Socrates Malamas, Christos Tsiamoulis, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Yiorgos Ntalaras, Domna Samiou, Chronis Aidonidis). In abroad he worked with well-known soloists such as Haig Yazdjan, Yiotis Kiourtzoglu, Socrates Sinopoulos, Ross Dally, Ara Dinkjan, Arto Tuncboyaciayan, Zohar Fresco, Theodosi Spasov, Misirli Ahmet, Karim Ziad, Enver Ismailov,Νedyalko Nedyalkov,Yurdal Tokcan, Οmar Faruk Tekbilek,Derya Turkan.
It is important to mention his presence in discography the last 18 years, with about 400 productions in recordings and theatrical plays.
In January 2004 he represented Greece in the international meeting (program MediMuses) for frame drums in Tunisia. With the MediMuses he gave seminars in Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Tunisia, Holland, New Zealand, England and USA. In April of the same year he was invited by the Greek composer Yiannis Psathas to participate into concerts with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble in Holland and Germany, and with the Stroma music group in New Zealand.
In 1998 he created the group Krotala with Petros Kourtis and Andreas Papas and with this they traveled in the 5th Drums festival of Berlkey College of Music (1999), the Rythmstick festival (London 2003), the Forum (Barcelona 2004), the EXPO (Japan 2005) and they participated in a recording with Loreena Muckennit.
Till now he released the albums Krousta (1995 FM Records) in cooperation with Yiorgos Yevgelis and Andreas Papas, Krotala (2002 ETERRA MUSIC), Voices of drums (2005 Metro Magazine) and Percussion Pictures (2011 ANTART PRODUCTIONS).
He participated in recordings for the Olympic Games of Athens.
Since 2009 he gives concerts with Haig Yazdjan (oud) and Yiotis Kiourtzoglu (bass) in Greece and Europe as a TRIO. He is as well part of Ara Dinkjan Quartet with Socrates Sinopoulos (kemence) and Yannis Kyrimkyridis (piano).
He has worked as teacher in music Schools in Greece, at present -since October 2016- he teaches traditional percussion at the Master degree of the Musicology department of the University of Athens.

Taxiarchis Georgoulis oud

Taxiarchis Georgoulis was born in Kalamata in 1993. Dealing with music began at the age of eight, with the bouzouki.
Some years later addressed the mainland lute under the guidance of Eliah Kappakou and later by Christos Zotos, playing at festivals and concerts throughout Greece.
He attended Byzantine music lessons with John Plemmenos, as well as classical harmony and counterpoint. In 2009 he entered the paths of oud with Nikos Palaiologos.
Later he participated in numerous seminars of Labyrinth Musical Workshop with Yurdal Tokcan, Erkan Ogur, Omer Erdogdular, Eugene Voulgaris, Papapetropoulos Pericles, Socrates Sinopoulos, Harris Lambrakis, Joseph Tawardos and Ross Daly.
He lived for two years in Crete where he worked with Ross Daly, with whom which continues to work as a member of the quartet along with Kelly Thomas and Sofia Efklidou.
Taxiarchis Georgoulis had the opportunity to work with great musicians like Ghewar Khan, Firoze Khan, Ahmet Erdogdular, Omer Erdogdular, Zohar Fresco, Nedyalko Nedyalkov, Giorgos Psaltis, Michael Kontaxakis, George Manolakis, Periklis Papapetropoulos,Nikos Andrikos,Vaggelis Karipis, Tasos Poulios, Dimitris Panagoulias, Palaiologos Nikos, Haig Yazdjian, etc. Recently he and Sofia Efklidou in cello formed the duet BERABER, where they play tropical compositions of the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as their own original compositions influenced by those traditions.

Tasos Poulios -kanun

Tasos Poulios is one of the most respected kanunists in Greece. He is a member of Haig Yadjian's quartet and has played with various artists including Martha Mavroidi, and Beraber Duo.
